From TechX365: "Milton Keynes was a planned "new town," so the roads were developed for cars to drive on, unlike a lot of other towns or cities in the UK. Even so, Milton Keynes has seen an explosion in growth over the last 30 years, leading to a congested, busy town center. Vivacity hopes that this new system will go at least some way to fixing this. It will cover 50 square miles and have cameras at all major junctions and car parks to ease bottlenecks".
According to the Telegraph: "Milton Keynes plans to install "smart" traffic lights that can detect where there is a heavy concentration of vehicles and alter their pattern to ease congestion. The city is investing £3 million in the technology that should start working by September 2018". From the MK Citizen: "Currently traffic lights work in sequences, but ‘smart’ lights use artificial intelligence to assess where there is heavy traffic and adjust their pattern accordingly. Fitted with tiny cameras, they will automatically give priority to ambulances, buses and even cyclists. They will also make roads safer for pedestrians and drivers alike... The AI camera accurately identifies and reports road usage, removing the need for cumbersome manual interpretation and significantly reducing the potential for human error".
